Deep color filters such as Red, Yellow, Orange and Green are used to manipulate contrast with Black & White films, though they can also be used effectively with color films for color special effects.
With Black & White films colors in the original scene which are unlike the filter color will be rendered darkly.
For instance, many people use orange filters in their Black & White photos to get darker blue skies than they would with a yellow filter but less than they would with a red.
